About DGMT

Our Mission Statement

To train body, mind and spirit through the highest level of authentic Muay Thai instruction in a safe, friendly and welcoming environment that encourages students to reach and obtain goals that aim to improve the overall quality of life.

History of Dragon Gym

In 1973 a man by the name of Chae T. Goh came to the Unites States from South Korea with just a few bucks in his pocket and the dream of teaching his art of Tae Kwon Do in the land of opportunity.

He opened his school in Exton, Pa and called it the name he decided on when he was just a child, Dragon Gym.

Fast forward over forty-years later and Dragon Gym is stronger than ever and has evolved into a martial arts university of sorts offering its members multiple martial arts with the highest level of instruction around.

Our Dragon Gym Muay Thai program was created by Lonnie Beck under the auspice of his instructor, Angel Cartagena. Today, the two continue to have a strong relationship and grown their knowledge of Muay Thai together.

DGMT has produced fighters that have fought in the WKA World Championships in Europe and has helped thousands of people reach their goals in health and fitness through its unique training philosophies and modalities.

Who We Are

The Culture of Dragon Gym

It is extremely uncommon for a martial arts school to remain open and strong for over 40 years, especially in the times that we live in. Dragon Gym has remained a staple of the community and a part of the families’ lives who live here ever since it opened its doors in 1973. Here are the core values that you can expect to experience when you become a part of the Dragon Gym:

Family:

Above all, Dragon Gym is a family. Its members are proud being a part of a successful team of like-minded people and of something that is bigger than themselves.

We often host social events both here (at the gym) and outside of Dragon Gym that include all of the students in every different program. Even though you may be a part of DGMT you will become familiar with students in Yoga, Kettlebell and Tae Kwon Do programs as well.

Teamwork:

There are no opponents within Dragon Gym, only training partners, friends and family. All of our classes are aimed to make you a better version of yourself

Respect and Understanding:

Inside of Dragon Gym all students act with warmth, compassion and equality toward one another, regardless of age, race, creed, nationality, etc. Inside of every person is a silent battle that you know nothing about.

What is Muay Thai?

Muay Thai is a fighting art that dates back thousands of years and has roots in the land of Siam, now modern day Thailand. The actual history of Muay Thai is debated among its leading voices due to the lack of documentation available on the art.

Today, Muay Thai is the national sport of Thailand and is just as popular in its home country as baseball in the U.S.A. or soccer in South America. Since its introduction to the western world only a few short years ago, Muay Thai is catching fire and luring in millions of loyal fans each year with its exciting and devastating fighting philosophy.

Known as The Science of Eight Limbs, Muay Thai utilizes two hands, two elbows, two knees and two legs as weapons. This separates this art from any other and easily classifies it as the most devastating striking art the world has ever seen.

Many other techniques help make Muay Thai effective for any application including clinching, trapping and sweeping opponents into defeat.

Currently, Muay Thai is challenging MMA as the fastest growing sport in the world and is gaining itself a great underground following of everyday practitioners in camps just like Dragon Gym.

Part of being a student is not only practicing and retaining information taught to you by your Coach but also researching and exploring information on your own. You are encouraged, as a student of DGMT to read, watch video and educate yourself on this unique and beautiful art of Muay Thai.

When you get stated in our Quick Start Muay Thai program, we’ll give you a set of boxing gloves. That’s all you need to get started. At the Dragon Gym we have a full compliment of equipment: Thai Pads, Heavy Bags, Targets, Mats, jump ropes, etc… As you continue training you may want to invest in some personal gear like shin pads and head gear.

Can I bring a friend?

How Many Women Train at Dragon Gym Muay Thai?

Actually, a lot! The classes at DGMT have just about a 50-50 male to female student ratio. Muay Thai is all about the use of technique and is perfectly suited for females – a demographic we specialize in teaching.

It seems like every one that trains Muay Thai is really young, am I too old?

No way! Our classes have a range of age groups. We teach teenagers all the way through students in their 60s. We can do this only because our program is technique and curriculum based, enabling us to tailor drills and workouts to your individual needs.

There’s a lot of talk about technique and progression, I just want to learn how to fight. Can I compete if I want to?

You sure can. Of course we want to make sure that you’re proficient in the basics and have sound fighting technique first. Then you can join the DGMT fight team. We actually have to WKA world champs on our team and Head Instructor Lonnie Beck is a member of the WKA National Team coaching staff.

Do I have to fight or compete?

No. Not everyone who trains Muay Thai is a fighter. Most of our students take classes to learn the art of muay thai, gain some self-defense skills, get in great shape and be part of a supportive community. We take you as far as you’re comfortable going and will guide you every step of the way if, one day, you decide that you would like to mark a Muay Thai match off your bucket list.
